The gap between recording and reporting
Screen recording has been available on every mobile device for years. iOS has had built-in screen recording since iOS 11 (2017), Android since Android 5.0 (2014). The recording part is solved.
What is not solved is the translation step: turning a video into a structured, actionable bug report. This is where most QA workflows break down.
The recording contains all the information a developer needs — but it is locked in a video format that is slow to review, impossible to search, and difficult to reference in code. A developer receiving a bug report with "see attached video" has to:
- Watch the entire video (often 1-5 minutes) to understand the issue
- Manually extract the steps to reproduce
- Guess the device context (unless the reporter remembered to include it)
- Cross-reference with code to identify likely failure points
- Ask follow-up questions for anything that is unclear
The information is in the video. The problem is extraction. AI solves this by watching the video for you and outputting structured data.
How AI turns video into structured data
clip.qa uses a multi-stage AI pipeline to analyze screen recordings and extract structured bug report data. Here is what happens under the hood:
Stage 1: Visual analysis
The AI processes key frames from the recording, identifying UI elements, screen transitions, error states, and visual anomalies. It recognises common patterns: loading spinners, error dialogs, empty states, unexpected layouts.
Stage 2: Action extraction
By analyzing the sequence of frames, the AI reconstructs what the user did: taps, swipes, text input, navigation between screens. These become the numbered "steps to reproduce" in the bug report.
Stage 3: Context capture
Device metadata is captured automatically: device model, OS version, app version, screen dimensions, network state, battery level. This context is critical for reproduction and is often missing from manual bug reports.
Stage 4: Anomaly detection
The AI identifies what went wrong by comparing observed behavior against expected UI patterns. A button that does nothing, a screen that flashes unexpectedly, a layout that shifts — these are flagged as the "actual behavior" in the report.
Stage 5: Report generation
All extracted data is compiled into a structured report: summary, steps to reproduce, expected vs actual behavior, device context, annotated screenshots, and severity assessment. The report is generated in multiple formats simultaneously — markdown for Jira/Linear, structured JSON for API consumption, and LLM-ready format for Cursor/Claude.

Sending bug reports to Jira is table stakes. The real advantage of AI-generated reports is the LLM-ready export.
When you tap "Copy for Cursor" in clip.qa, the report is formatted as a structured prompt that an AI coding tool can parse and act on. It includes not just the bug description, but contextual hints that help the AI locate the relevant code:
- UI component names extracted from the recording (button labels, screen titles, navigation paths)
- Timing information (the bug happens after a 3-second delay → likely an async/network issue)
- Pattern matching ("button remains active during API call" → missing disabled state during loading)
- Severity signal (double charge → financial impact → high priority)
The result: paste the report into Cursor or Claude Code, and the AI can often identify the exact file and function that needs to change. For the example above, it would likely point to the order submission handler and suggest adding a loading state guard.
When to use video-to-report vs manual reporting
AI-generated reports from video are not always the right choice. Here is when each approach works best:
Use video-to-report (clip.qa) when:
You are doing exploratory testing or testing on a real device. It is ideal when the bug involves visual or interaction issues and you want fast turnaround.
It is also the right choice when you need LLM-ready output for AI coding tools like Cursor or Claude Code.
Use manual reporting when:
The bug is purely backend with no visual manifestation, or you have detailed log output to include. It is also better when the bug requires specific API request/response data.
Manual reporting is the right call when you are filing from a production monitoring alert where you already have structured log data.
