Which screen-recording formats does Jira accept?
Atlassian’s Jira Cloud attachment list identifies these video formats:
| Format shown in Atlassian’s list | Extension shown by Atlassian |
|---|---|
| 3GPP | .3gpp |
| ASF | .asf |
| AVI | .avi |
| DV | .dv |
| FLV | .flv |
| M2TS | .m2ts |
| M4V | .m4v |
| Matroska video | .mkv |
| QuickTime / QT | .mov, .qt |
| MP4 | .mp4 |
| MPEG | .mpg, .mpeg, .ts |
| OGG video | .ogg |
| WebM | No extension is displayed in the table |
| WMV | .wmv |
For a quick choice, MP4 and MOV are both explicitly listed. Jira’s supported-file list means the attachment type is accepted; it does not promise that every browser or Jira view will play every file inline. If inline playback matters to your workflow, test the format in your Jira site.
Atlassian may update this list. Check its current supported file types for Jira Cloud if an extension is missing or an upload is rejected.
How do you add a screen recording to a Jira issue?
You can attach a video from the issue itself. Atlassian documents two ways to reach the attachment control:
- Open the Jira issue where the evidence belongs.
- Drag the video file onto the issue, or select Add and then Add an attachment. You can also use the attachment section’s Add attachment control.
- Choose the file or drag it into Jira’s media picker.
- Wait for the upload to finish, then check that the attachment appears on the issue.
- Add a short comment with the point in the recording where the behavior occurs and what you expected to happen.
If you are filing a bug, pair the recording with a short written summary, reproduction steps, expected behavior, actual behavior, and the device or browser involved. A video shows what happened; the text tells the developer what to look for and how to repeat it. See the screen-recording-to-Jira workflow and our bug-report template guide.
What is Jira's screen-recording file size limit?
Atlassian says Jira Cloud’s default maximum size for one attachment is 1 GB, and its attachment settings allow a maximum of 2 GB per file. Jira Free also has a total file-storage limit of 2 GB per app, so an individual file can be below the per-file limit while the site is near its overall storage cap.
Before compressing or splitting a video, check the limit configured by your administrator. If a recording is too large, export a shorter clip around the reproduction, or use a smaller file only if it keeps the relevant behavior visible. Avoid lowering quality so far that taps, text, or loading states become hard to see.
Why won't Jira upload a screen recording?
Check these causes in order:
- Unsupported extension: compare the file with Atlassian’s supported types. MP4 (
.mp4) and QuickTime (.mov) appear in the official list. - File exceeds the configured limit: the default is 1 GB, but the administrator may have set a lower value.
- Attachments are disabled or restricted: Atlassian says attachment settings and permissions can affect whether users can add files.
- Storage is full: Jira Free has a 2 GB total storage limit per app.
- Filename contains a blocked character: Atlassian says filenames cannot contain backslash, slash, quotation mark, percent, colon, dollar sign, question mark, or asterisk.
- Temporary browser or network issue: retry the upload after checking that the file opens locally and the connection is stable.
If the file meets the site’s rules and still fails, ask your Jira administrator to check attachment settings and the configured maximum size. Do not assume the recording codec is unsupported just because one upload attempt failed.
How can you give a Jira issue clearer bug evidence?
A Jira attachment preserves the recording alongside the issue. For a more complete report, keep the video and the structured facts together: what action exposed the bug, what should have happened, what actually happened, and the relevant environment details.
clip.qa turns a screen recording into a structured bug report. Console and network capture are documented for its Chrome extension; mobile reports can include device telemetry. The extension’s public release is unverified. Its Jira integration is coming soon; today, you can copy a report as Markdown and paste it into Jira. The recording analysis runs in the cloud.
